Moroto Regional Referral Hospital (RRH) was first established in the 1940s as a basic healthcare facility, which was later upgraded and became a regional referral hospital in July 2009. The hospital serves a catchment population of about 1.46 million people who live in the Karamoja sub-region located in northeastern Uganda. The sub-region covers various districts such as Abim, Amudat, Kaabong, Karenga, Kotido, Moroto, Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit, and Napak. The hospital has a bed capacity of 230, and it employs 267 staff members who were directly hired by the hospital. Currently, 67 percent of the approved positions are filled, which is 420. The hospital has six substantive specialists, and two more are yet to be appointed. The specialist capacity of the hospital stands at 22 percent, with plans to improve it to 30 percent during the current financial year (23/24). The hospital is also a training center for interns in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, and pediatrics.
